Welcome

Meditation has been the biggest game changer in my life and I am passionate about sharing it with others. It has been proven to reduce stress, help manage anxiety, alleviate some physical conditions, improve mood and bring benefit to relationships.  I am a trained meditation teacher & facilitator, passing with distinction after completing training with the British School of Meditation in 2022.

I love sharing the simple, life changing techniques that I use everyday. Even if you have never tried meditation, can't sit still for 5 minutes, or think it's just beyond you, meditation could be just what you need to transform your life..

A new twice monthly online meditation class 'Dark | Light' starts on 18th July and I offer face to face classes in Bristol UK and online one to one training and support via Zoom.  All training formats and sessions introduce trainees to a wide range of meditation styles and techniques and can help individuals build and develop a strong personal practice.

I set this online meditation group up to create a small, safe community in which members can explore various meditation practices to help them along their personal journey.

My own journey has taken me through many challenges and my meditation practice has helped me to survive and transmute an array of seemingly negative experiences including bereavement, divorce, 2 life threatening cardiac events, depression, CPTSD and recovery from active addiction. At the time of writing I am 23.5 years sober and my life is still being transformed daily by my practice. I trained as a meditation teacher/facilitator with the British School of Meditation, passing with distinction in 2022. My training expanded my then existing practice to encompass a wide range of meditation styles and techniques, including breath work, mantras, guided meditations, embodied awareness, visualisations and chanting. I am now convinced that no matter how far down any scale of emotional, spiritual and practical circumstances I may see or find myself, meditation in all it's forms is one of the greatest tools at my disposal to bring me out of the darkness and into the light.

I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

“Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment."

Wise words from Alan Watts.

I practice and faciliate meditation so that I can be present in the moment, for it is in the moment that I am able to access my conception of divinity and be at peace.

So many of us have said that we meditate and then don’t bother. I’ve been there myself, talking about meditation, encouraging others to meditate, thinking about meditating… but not actually setting aside any time to meditate. It’s like reading a book on Pranayama without doing any of the breath work, watching YouTube videos of Tai Chi sitting on a train, or thinking about taking up a yoga practice but never even rolling out a mat. My practice ebbs and flows in intensity, but it's always there.  A significant lesson I learned early on in my training that has kept me going is that ‘there is no such thing as a bad meditation’. That's true, but there is the unfortunate state of no meditation. My practice, however reluctant I may be to engage with it on somedays, always surprises and benefits me in some way.

About Tim Kirby

I graduated from The British School of Meditation in early 2022.  I was keen to help others access the benfits of a regular and deep meditation practice. I'm happy to say that I passed the course with distinction. My training introduced me to an even wider range of meditation styles than I had previously experienced. Many of these are now embedded in my daily practice and to I love to share them with students in my classes.

In my working life, I trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the early 80's, then worked as a professional actor, voice over artist, presenter and musician. In 2001  I switched to working behind the camera as a producer and editor. I have the unusual record of having TV credits as an actor, editor, colourist, audio dubbing engineer,  voice artist and even a props van driver!

I was drawn to a life based on more mindfulness and meditation after dealing with substance and alcohol use disorders in a 12 Step setting, passing on the keys to my own personal recovery (I am 22 years sober) through extensive peer-to-peer work with addicts and alcoholics. I am also a survivor of 2 serious heart attacks in 2013 and 2017, which reinforced my interest in meditation as an aid to physical recovery as well as a tool for stress management.

I believe in practicing meditation for healing, growth, awareness and self-discovery and my goal and purpose as a meditation teacher and facilitator is to create a safe and welcoming space where  others can do the same.

Beginning this September, I am running a series of classes for beginners to meditation or those looking to refresh their meditation experience. Over 6 weeks, attendees will discover how to build the platform for a regular meditation practice. We will explore various types of meditation, from guided meditations through mantra meditation, chanting meditation, walking meditation and ultimately silent meditation in a variety of simple and easy postures. The course is now fully booked and I'm really looking forward to beginning the sessions.

New Paragraph

  • What is Meditation?

Many forms of mindfulness meditation can be defined as observing and listening, noticing thought without attachment, non-doing or simply being with what is. Different definitions of meditation can span across different practices. It would be quite wrong to suggest that a Chanting or Walking meditation was ‘non-doing’ for example, but such forms of meditation could be described as focused attention or creating an enhanced connection with consciousness, a definition which could also be applied back to mindfulness or Zen meditation and forward to other forms of meditation.

All forms of meditation could be defined as re-training the mind as they all affect the thinking patterns and subsequent reactions of those who practice them. Contemplation Meditation is in some circles, defined as the contemplation of words, prayers and other writings deemed holy or sacred, whereas in others it can be defined as spiritually centered observation or consideration of a specific idea, question or situation with the goal of receiving insight from a higher power. Alternatively, some say that Contemplation meditation is, in fact, the act of observing without distraction an object, a painting, sculpture, or a landscape or feature of natural beauty. All of these forms of contemplation could be defined as focused attention, as could Chanting, Walking, Silent, Sitting and Mindfulness meditations.

For the non-secular practitioner, all forms of Meditation could also be defined as making or strengthening a connection with Divinity, whether that divinity resides within or without. To both secular and non-secular practitioners, meditation is a journey rather than a destination. Meditation is recognising a different way of ‘being’ with your experience, whatever your experience may be.

  • British School of Meditation

The British School of Meditation has been established to train teachers in meditation techniques to meet the growing demand for highly trained and accredited meditation teachers throughout the UK.

The course I undertook, led by Sarah Presley, consisted of 5 days face to face training as well as more than 50 hours of written work. The course is fully externally accredited by Ascentis and I am very happy to say that I passed with distinction.

  • Meditation Classes in Bristol / South Wales UK
